What will I do during a Service Learning Trip (SLT)?

During a Service Learning Trip (SLT), you’ll immerse yourself in community-driven projects focused on healthcare, education, and development. You will shadow local healthcare professionals, assist with medical clinics, and contribute to long-term infrastructure projects. You’ll also explore the root causes of poverty through immersive activities, gaining a deeper understanding of global inequalities.

What This Covers / Why It Matters

A Service Learning Trip (SLT) is more than just volunteer work. It’s an opportunity for you to engage directly with communities in Latin America and Africa to tackle the root causes of poverty. By participating in hands-on projects, you’ll help improve access to healthcare, education, and infrastructure—all while gaining real-world experience and cultural insight.

Throughout the trip, you’ll gain a unique perspective on global health and development, actively contributing to solutions that communities themselves have identified. Your involvement not only creates an impact during your trip but also helps sustain long-term positive change.

What You’ll Do

The SLT experience offers several ways for you to actively participate in community efforts:

  • Reality Tour:
Gain firsthand insight into the daily challenges communities face. Walk with local residents and staff to see how these communities are addressing issues like poverty, health, and education.

  • Mobile Clinics:
You’ll shadow healthcare professionals and assist at mobile clinics, gaining valuable experience in triage, health education, and general medicine. While all care is provided by licensed local professionals, your role is to observe and support, learning about health access in underserved areas.

  • Community Development Projects:
Working alongside community members, you’ll help build or improve essential infrastructure. Projects could include staircases, water systems, or home renovations. These initiatives are designed by the community to support long-term solutions.

How It All Connects to Your Learning

  • Cultural Immersion:
Beyond your work, you’ll immerse yourself in the local culture. Whether it’s learning about history, traditions, or day-to-day life, these experiences enrich your understanding of the communities you serve.

  • Evening Reflection:
Each day will end with guided discussions where you reflect on your experiences, deepening your understanding of global health, poverty, and development challenges. You’ll connect your service to broader educational goals and learn about ethical practices and sustainable development.

  • Advocacy for Change:
This trip isn’t just about what you do during the week. It’s about preparing you to advocate for justice and equity long after your return, whether through MEDLIFE chapters, internships, or other initiatives.
