What types of healthcare activities are included?

On a Service Learning Trip (SLT), you will engage in a variety of healthcare activities aimed at supporting local communities. These include shadowing healthcare professionals in mobile clinics, providing health education, assisting in triage, and learning about health access in underserved areas. All healthcare services are delivered under the guidance of local licensed staff, ensuring ethical practices and cultural sensitivity.

What healthcare activities will you participate in?

During your Service Learning Trip (SLT), you will contribute to meaningful healthcare initiatives that directly support local communities. Your activities will allow you to gain hands-on experience while working under the guidance of licensed local professionals. The goal is not only to assist with immediate healthcare needs but also to learn about the deeper issues impacting healthcare access and delivery in underserved regions.

Healthcare Activities You’ll Be Involved In:

  • Mobile Clinics
You’ll assist in mobile medical clinics, which travel to remote areas to provide basic healthcare services. Here, you’ll have the chance to shadow doctors and nurses, participate in triage, and provide education on health topics like nutrition, disease prevention, and more.
    Stations may include:

    • Triage: Gathering medical histories and initial assessments

    • General Medicine: Observing patient consultations and treatments

    • Education: Teaching important health practices such as hygiene or gender-based violence prevention

    • Pharmacy: Assisting with dispensing medications

    • OB/GYN (where applicable): Assisting in women’s health stations, including breast exams and cervical cancer screenings

  • Health Education
Health education is a central part of the SLT experience. Volunteers assist in teaching community members about hygiene, disease prevention, and other important topics. The education provided can empower individuals to improve their health and prevent future health issues.

  • Dental Care
In some locations, you will support the dental care station by helping educate children and adults on oral hygiene. This station may also involve assisting dentists in providing basic care, such as fluoride treatments or preventative care.

Ethical Engagement and Local Empowerment

All medical care provided during the trip is delivered by licensed local healthcare professionals. As a volunteer, you’ll never replace these professionals but will support them in their work. Your role is to observe, learn, and provide help as needed, always respecting the expertise of local staff and the needs of the community.

MEDLIFE’s approach emphasizes ethical healthcare delivery. The activities you participate in are designed to ensure that your involvement has a sustainable and respectful impact, promoting long-term health improvements for the communities we serve.
