What this covers / why it matters

Before your Service Learning Trip (SLT), MEDLIFE takes several steps to ensure you’re fully prepared for the journey ahead. We focus on your personal safety, ethical engagement, and cultural sensitivity, ensuring you feel confident and supported every step of the way. Preparation is vital for both your learning and the communities you'll engage with—ensuring that your impact is both meaningful and respectful.

The preparation process involves safety and health training, cultural awareness, and understanding the core principles of ethical service. MEDLIFE’s pre-trip preparation ensures that you can make the most out of this transformative experience, knowing exactly what to expect and how to stay safe.

Steps to Prepare for Your MEDLIFE Trip

1. Attend the Pre-Trip Orientation

You’ll attend a mandatory welcome meeting and orientation session, where you’ll meet your Trip Leaders and the local MEDLIFE team. This is the perfect time to ask any questions and clarify details about the schedule, community expectations, and your role during the trip.

2. Complete Health & Safety Briefings

You’ll receive a comprehensive safety and risk assessment, including tips on staying healthy, managing allergies, and preventing common illnesses. MEDLIFE staff will also discuss emergency protocols to ensure you're prepared for any unexpected situations.

3. Cultural Sensitivity Training

In preparation for interacting with local communities, you’ll be introduced to the customs and traditions of the region. This helps you engage respectfully, ensuring that your presence contributes to positive cultural exchange and avoids misunderstandings.

4. Packing & Logistics Information

You’ll receive detailed instructions on what to pack, including travel essentials, health-related items, and any region-specific items (like vaccinations or local regulations). Additionally, you’ll be briefed on travel insurance, flight booking, and arrival logistics.

5. Ongoing Support from Trip Leaders

Your Trip Leaders will be your main point of contact. They will keep you updated with any changes, provide real-time guidance, and make sure that your journey goes smoothly. They also carry emergency communication tools and will be available 24/7 to assist with any concerns.
