Learning Leadership Through Pre Med Volunteering: How Ohio State Won Most Outstanding College Chapter

Finding opportunities to build leadership skills while also gaining real-world experience can be a serious challenge for a lot of students pursuing the medical field. That’s why it's so important to build on-campus networks where pre med volunteering is something that can be organized by student leaders that are passionate about global health and being part of something bigger than themselves.

Joining a student organization like MEDLIFE's college chapters is a unique way to join and help organize impact-driven projects on campus while also preparing for a future in healthcare. The Ohio State University chapter recently proved the power of student-led impact by winning MEDLIFE's Chapter Award for Most Outstanding College! We chatted with their chapter president to get some insight on their internal operations.

Driving Consistency Through Clear Communication

Building an award-winning chapter takes structure, dedication, and clear alignment among executive board members. If you're looking for effective college club ideas to keep members engaged year-round, strong internal organization is key. Lucia, the incoming chapter president at The Ohio State University, told us that having a shared vision is essential for keeping a team on track:

"We have a really good executive team that really communicates well and works together because we all have one common goal of making sure that we're helping others and getting people to go to the SLT, and spreading word about just how important this cause is."

Turning Passion Into Action

While campus initiatives help build local community, participating in Service Learning Trips takes learning to the next level. Hands-on volunteer work for medical students and pre-health undergraduates allows them to rotate through clinical stations, assist local healthcare professionals in mobile clinics, and support sustainable infrastructure projects in underserved communities.

Sharing personal experiences from these trips is one of the most effective ways to inspire new recruits. Having attended three SLTs, Lucia used her past experiences to remind team members of the bigger picture:

"I've been sharing the word about the experiences that I've had in the past, and reminding them of what MEDLIFE's mission is. I think that's just so important to always remember and keep in the back of our mind of what the bigger picture is..."

Expanding Impact Year After Year

Through a dedication to pre med volunteering, campus engagement, and fundraising efforts, MEDLIFE chapters can experience massive growth over time. From her freshman year to her senior year, Lucia witnessed OSU's chapter expand its reach, recruit more members, and make a tangible difference in resource-limited communities across the globe.

When students come together around a shared passion for global service, pre med volunteering has the ability to transform from a simple club activity into an award-winning movement that changes lives both on campus and abroad.
