How St. John’s School Used Their Student Leadership Skills To Create Impact in Puerto Rico

When Amanda founded the MEDLIFE Chapter at Saint John’s School in San Juan, her vision went far beyond starting a simple campus club. She wanted to build a platform where authentic student leadership could bridge the gap between passion and real-world impact. Now, that vision has taken flight. Her chapter’s dedication recently earned them the High School Collaborative Spirit Award at our 2026 MEDLIFE Chapter Awards, proving that when young leaders come together for a common cause, they can help contribute to sustainable and authentic change in communities both near and far.

Expanding Reach Through Local Partnerships

From the start, Amanda’s team realized that true engagement would require stepping beyond their campus. The chapter quickly established meaningful local and national partnerships to maximize their outreach. They collaborated with the Ronald McDonald Foundation to support initiatives for children battling cancer and teamed up with the American Red Cross to host a hands-on, compression-only CPR workshop. They also tackled preventive healthcare by promoting National Nutrition Month and teaching younger children proper dental hygiene habits. As Amanda told us, “These experiences reflected one of MEDLIFE’s core beliefs: that meaningful change starts locally.” Through this kind of outreach, the chapter demonstrated how partnering with local charities and volunteering in Puerto Rico can create sustainable, grassroots change that addresses vital community needs.

Turning Big Ideas into Structured Action

Executing successful service projects requires more than just good ideas, it demands structure and targeted strategies. “I believe that one of the biggest factors behind our success this year was organization and consistency,” Amanda explained. By establishing SMART goals, the chapter’s Executive Board ensured that every project had a clear purpose, a defined timeline, and a measurable outcome. Holding regular monthly planning meetings allowed the E-Board to keep members accountable and track their progress continuously. This structured approach provided the ground work necessary for effective student leadership within their chapter, ensuring that every idea was backed by action.

Building Community On Campus

Campus involvement was another key pillar of their strategy. The chapter actively integrated itself into everyday school life by sponsoring the school musical, organizing volleyball tournaments, and contributing features to the French newsletter as well as the official school newspaper, The Eye. By staying visible across a multitude of campus activities, they expanded their reach, boosted social media engagement, and welcomed new members into the fold. These internal collaborations built a vibrant, supportive community within the school, proving that peer-to-peer connection is just as essential as external outreach.

The Blueprint for Future Leaders

St. John’s School and Amanda’s journey provides an excellent blueprint for student groups and MEDLIFE chapters everywhere. Her primary recommendation for other chapters looking to make a splash is simple: “My advice to other chapters is to stay organized, set clear and SMART goals early on, and look for organizations that share values similar to MEDLIFE’s mission.” Through dedicated student leadership, clear goal-setting, and a relentless spirit of collaboration, the Saint John’s School MEDLIFE Chapter has shown that young people don’t have to wait for the future to make a difference, they can drive meaningful change right now.
