At MEDLIFE, our student chapters are the driving force behind our sustainable community development and healthcare equity projects in Latin America and Africa. Every successful Service Learning Trip starts with the work of passionate campus leaders who inspire their peers to step outside the classroom and make a real-world difference.
Becoming an effective global health volunteer leader isn’t just about organizing logistics, it is about building a community, delegating responsibilities, and maintaining high energy throughout the academic year. During a recent SLT in Peru, we caught up with Gabriella, an incoming Chapter President and current SLT Coordinator from Ohio State University, to learn how her team scaled their chapter's impact from 20 to 60 student participants.
Building a Unified Leadership Team
Consistency starts from within the executive board. When asked how her team maintained momentum, Gabriella highlighted clear communication and role division as their main foundation. Rather than putting the burden on a single person, the executive board focused on defining specific roles so every officer knew their exact responsibilities.
"There was pretty good communication between the exec members to divide the responsibilities and for everyone to be certain of their roles... We just worked really well together, and communication was a big part of it."
When chapter leaders operate as a cohesive unit, the entire organization benefits from smoother planning and stronger execution.
Actionable Student Engagement Strategies
Keeping a chapter active requires a deliberate approach to outreach. To keep members motivated, OSU deployed multi-channel student engagement strategies that kept MEDLIFE top-of-mind across campus:
-
Social Media Campaigns: Sharing photos, volunteer stories, and trip highlights to showcase the hands-on impact of Mobile Clinics and what it truly looks like to go abroad with MEDLIFE.
-
Direct Outreach: Spreading awareness about SLTs directly inside university classrooms, student meetings, and campus events to ensure you're reaching as many people as possible.
-
Consistent Reminders: Sending timely email updates and news to keep general members informed about upcoming meetings and deadlines.
By combining digital visibility with face-to-face recruitment, Ohio state's chapter created an easy and welcoming pipeline for any student interested in international service.
Tripling Student Participation
For pre-health students, hands-on clinical exposure in low-resource settings is deeply sought after. MEDLIFE's programs focus heavily on pre-med volunteering and give students a chance to shadow medical professionals, support community-led development projects, and gain a grounded perspective on global health disparities all without any formal experience required.
Gabriella’s team leveraged this to achieve remarkable chapter growth over three years:
"My first year it was only 20 students. Last year we got up to 40 students, and this year it’s around 60 students from Ohio State! As SLT Coordinator, I think my biggest accomplishment has been all the students that we have been able to recruit to come on the SLT."
Growing from 20 to 60 participants means tripling the support, resources, and volunteer hours delivered to partner communities abroad.
Hard Work Pays Off
Recognizing leadership achievements reinforces a culture of excellence. Winning a MEDLIFE chapter award during their trip was a testament to the dedication of OSU’s leadership team and general body.
As Gabriella noted, success is a collective effort: "I feel like hard work pays off... It's obviously a prize for everyone in the exec, the general body, and the people that come on the SLT."
Every dedicated global health volunteer brings us one step closer to a more equal world. Whether you are leading a chapter or embarking on your very first trip, your dedication creates a lasting ripple effect.
